1/7/23: Swallowtail Chrysalis

Writer's picture: Ethan LepidopteraEthan Lepidoptera

Swallowtail butterflies are a relatively easy species to keep as chrysalis. Below are the chrysalis I currently am working with.

The species are labeled from left to right. Zebra swallowtai (Eurytides marcellus), Spicebush swallowtail (Papilio troilus), Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor), Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) and lastly, the Western Tiger swallowtail (Papilio rutulus).

So far, Zebra Swallowtails have had success. 3/7 have emerged so far. ET Swallowtails have had 2/4 emerge. Spicebush Swallowtails have had 0/6 pupae completely emerge. One emerged with slightly bent wings and unfortunately a deformed proboscis.

I will upload the rest when they all eclose.
